The Brief History of the Tunic
The smock, also known as a tunic, is a garment that dates back to antiquity. Under the name "tunica," it was a piece of clothing worn as a dress or a long shirt. Over the centuries, the tunic has become a garment often associated with certain trades and sailors due to its practicality. Generally made of cotton canvas, Linenshed revisits it to offer it in a range of 16 colors of very high-quality linen, for better durability and great comfort.
This tunic shirt has the particularity of having a loose fit and a split collar. The tunic can be made with short sleeves or long sleeves, and if it has a button, it will be placed inside because originally, this prevented objects or fishing nets from catching on it. This traditional garment, still made to this day and still worn by the French navy, is now an iconic product that can be worn indoors, during vacations, or during sports activities, all year round.
Why Prefer a Linen Tunic?
One may prefer a linen tunic over cotton for several reasons. First of all, linen is a lightweight and breathable natural fiber, making it an ideal choice for hot climates as it allows for better regulation of body temperature. Additionally, linen has absorbent properties, wicking away sweat and maintaining a feeling of freshness. It is also more durable than cotton, resistant to wear and repeated washings. Finally, linen has a unique texture and an elegant aesthetic, making it a popular choice for both casual and dressy outfits.
Choosing the Right Washed Linen Tunic
Linenshed offers a collection of tunics to wear all year round. Shirts and tunics are available in sizes XS to 2XL for women and XS to 4XL for the men's collection. It is advisable to consult our size guide before confirming your order (the dimensions indicated there provide information about body dimensions, not garment dimensions, specifically for ordering a tunic).
The tunic has a loose cut that anticipates shrinkage during the first machine wash. And if you require a slight modification in the length of the garment at the back or sleeves, our team will always be attentive to your needs. The washed linen tunic is therefore very easy to maintain, and the special treatment of washed linen gives it that texture and softness that are so appreciated, requiring no ironing. Our washed linen tunic is therefore the ideal garment and an alternative to the shirt, very trendy to wear over jeans or linen pants as well as over washed linen or cotton shorts or Bermuda shorts.
